40 Old Life Hacks That Are Still Unbelievably Useful

People don’t usually look back at the beginning of the 20th century for advice, but what if we were actually able to learn something useful from the Lost Generation?

Below you’ll find 40 how-to-do-it pictures discovered in cigarette boxes over 100 years ago and digitized by the New York Public Library. The tips they give are so helpful that you might want to take some notes.

Back in 1900, cigarette cards were famous collectibles enclosed in every pack and displayed pictures of celebrities and advertisements. Gallaher cigarettes, a UK-founded tobacco company that used to be the greatest worldwide, decided to print a series of useful how-to’s on their cards, which varied from everyday tasks (boiling potatoes) to rare situations (stopping a runaway horse). The majority of them are unbelievably clever and practical.

The entire set of life hacks is currently part of the NYPL’s George Arents Collection. Take a look at some of the smartest ones below. Don’t forget to comment for your favorite!
